I’ve been spending quite a lot of my spare time reading over the holidays. Specifically Quora, which can be interesting and also total trash.
As we enter a new decade I’ve been reading about aging and how people are dealing with the inevitable aches, pains, illnesses, inconveniences and so on. I haven’t started to feel any of these as yet, being focused on stroke rehab and such. I have no room in my life for new ailments and thankfully they are obliging. I’ve been thinking about this new decade and in fact the next 10 years beyond that.
I’m in my 50’s and life is good but I hear things start to break down more in the 60’s and beware the 70’s where it can be the start of a downward trend, or so I’ve read. I’ve heard your 80’s can be absolute shit, if you haven’t prepared yourself for it.
It really matters what you do right now in these years when you are still in pretty good form and in control of yourself and your life that matters.
Let’s look forward to whatever the future has in store for us not dwell back in the mistakes and oversights of the past. I was discussing this with Awesome Mountain Trainer, Sarah, this morning and she suggested the following exercise:
Think of three things that you would like to use to describe yourself today:
- Size 6. Today’s feature picture is Size 6 me, not all that long ago.
- Fast and Agile with excellent posture.
- Limber. Calm & Contemplative.
These are your goals
Now think what do you and I need to do to fit these descriptions of yourself?
- 8 lbs weight loss; maintain current eating plan; eliminate carbs.
- Practice climbing stairs up and down, graduate to climbing up and down without using aids for mobility or balance. Increase treadmill speed to new faster walking pace as a stepping stone to building to a jogging pace.
- Increase stretching with Awesome Mountain Yogi, Rickki. Incorporate stretching into evening activities.
This is your Action Plan. Let’s look forward to making these into new habits that stick. I’ve just wrote mine on a post-it note which I will stick on my bathroom vanity as a daily reminder. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but man, those Romans worked hard every day, building roads, viaducts, conquering foreign lands, and such.
Feel free to look back on your progress as you move forward to achieving your goals.
I’m determined to spend the next 15 years doing things I love, like travel, before I reach the age and possibly state of health where it becomes more difficult if not downright impossible. I refuse to be that woman complaining about all the things I should have done or said or places I should have gone when it’s too late to do anything about it.
No way did I work my entire life to find myself helpless and unable to do the things I wanted to do when I am still bodily and financially able. And I’m not about to let anyone else tell me what not to do at this point in my life. I mentioned in a previous post that people want to be kind but maybe some may always think of me as a stroke. ”victim”. I have refused from the beginning to accept that I am in any way a victim then or now. I’ve got my awesome back. And I have ambitious new goals to keep it that way. Deal with it. I’ve never let anyone tell me what to do before and I’m surely not now. Roger to that.
It’s not that complicated for me. I love to travel and I plan to do some every year this decade and for as long as I am able with my husband or BFF’s or alone if I must.
Beginning this year with the fantastic trip that my husband has planned for us in February and March: Miami and the Florida Keys. Convertible rented for the drive from Miami to Key West. Stop at Cheeca Lodge on Marathon Key and the Islamorada Fish Company. A three day Bahamas cruise in-between. Lots of stone crab. Re-living some old memories of super-fun me in my 20’s and 30’s. On the way back I will linger a few extra days in Toronto to see my family and meet my husband back in Calgary later.
Later in the year a couple of weeks back in Toronto in July to catch up with friends then on to “Babe Club” with my best friends Nancy & Mea in Kingston. We were supposed to do a trip to Europe this year but it looks like we will defer that to next year as I’m almost tapped out on my travel budget for the year. Stay tuned, I may get bored and need a wee pick-me-up later in the year. Perhaps a Paris in the Fall?
The point is, get yourself up and engaged with your life while you are still in your best years of health and mobility. No point in looking back in a disappointed, sad, sort of way. I’m not. I’ve decided to travel alone if I need to but I’m definitely not sitting at home when I could be out embracing the world, enjoying life and making new friends.
I am strong, I am beautiful, I am awesome, and I am still young and free.
