Family is a complicated topic. Maybe you have a large family or maybe small, mine is just right. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about family recently as events unfold in the lives of mine.
My Dad has been in a managed care facility for over 5 years now. He smiles all the time and is well looked after. Judging by his weight gain, he hasn’t missed many meals. I don’t get to see him very often but it’s OK, he doesn’t remember who I am. It’s sad to see all those faces kept behind locked doors.The staff are kind, but this is not the life that any of these people would have chosen for themselves. I sincerely hope not to end my life in this fashion and I’m sure you feel the same way.
So I insure myself from this the only way I know how: and that’s by protecting my greatest asset, my health. I continue to exercise every day – 4 days a week with Sarah my awesome mountain trainer and I’ve just added two 1.5 hour stretch yoga sessions with Rikki into my week. Coupled with clean, healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight, this is the best you can do for yourself and your future. OK, that’s only six days, you’re telling yourself, what on earth does she do on the 7th? For me, that’s “Do what I want Wednesday” and usually involves a massage with Margaret at Spa 901 and well, whatever else I want. I am usually out and about running errands so this counts as activity. Perhaps I’ll do some grocery shopping or read a book. Whatever I want, anything goes on Do what I want Wednesday. Yesterday I did some stretch yoga in the morning followed by an appointment at my dentist. Good dental care and hygiene should always rank high on your list along with a good skincare regime.
Perhaps people around you are starting to age, maybe more quickly than you or they expected. Arthritis and other chronic illnesses are becoming more commonplace. I see it happening with my friends and family and it’s not a pleasant experience. For three years I have jokingly remarked that I’m glad I had my stroke when I was younger, because I was young, strong and healthy enough to recover from it well. Others will not be so lucky. So grab yourself a day to do whatever you want. Maybe make it a weekly ritual if you can swing it.
I’ve now managed to organize my days into a) mornings are for me and my health/well-being and here I schedule exercise, Doctors/Dentist, hair salon, massage, mani-pedi, waxing,etc. and b) afternoons are for work and, c)Wednesdays, I keep free for whatever I want, and d) weekends are for fun!
It’s a good life and an excellent mix/balance of work, exercise and fun.
I am strong and I am beautiful. I did what I wanted to yesterday and I’m looking forward to a fun weekend!
